If you are a first-generation and/or income-eligible student, what has your experience been like at UCSB?

As a first-generation student, my experience at UCSB has been mixed at times but ultimately very rewarding. The road to independence has been rough but I'm very proud of all the work that I have done for myself so far. Everyday I think about what a privilege it is to be here. This is an opportunity that my family has never had before and although it can feel like a lot of pressure, I try to think of it more as an achievement.

What would you like to share with students about your experience at UCSB?

Get out of your house! Join a club, join a sport, go to the library, make new friends, make your own club, join a student org., etc. Anything possible to get out and network. Friends make the college experience what it is and networking can provide you with invaluable resources.

Top tips for fellow students? (Study tips, self care hacks, fav resources on campus, etc)

Cal Fresh is a great way to save money if you qualify. The money you save on groceries adds up and can really ease the cost of college. Also, make sure to take care of yourself and do not prioritize school over your own health. It may be tempting but burning yourself out too quick can make your grades worse! It may even span multiple quarters, it's not a risk worth taking!

Best advice you've received that has helped you at UCSB.

All you have to do is ask! Need an extension? Ask before the deadline and you'll get it. Need Financial Aid? There are tons of resources on campus for that. Need to see a therapist? Ask a professor or counselor for a referral. The list goes on. You wont get something unless you ask for it.

Why did you choose to be an EOP peer mentor/office assistant?

I chose to be an EOP Peer Mentor because I'm deeply passionate about supporting students and helping them succeed in their college journey. Connecting with students on an individual level is something I truly value, and I see this role as a meaningful way to make a positive impact. Additionally, this experience aligns with my professional goal of working with students at a college level in my future career. I'm excited to contribute to their growth and development while gaining valuable experience for my own aspirations.
