If you are a first-generation and/or income-eligible student, what has your experience been like at UCSB?

As a first-generation student, my experience at UCSB has been shaped by the incredible campus resources available to me. These resources have made my transition to college smoother and more manageable. Despite initially feeling lost, I was able to seek academic guidance, which has opened many doors and opportunities. I have grown significantly, gained knowledge, and now feel confident navigating my academic path. I've met amazing people who have been incredibly supportive, and I've made an effort to put myself out there, ensuring that I stay on the right track while also enjoying and making the most of my college experience.

What would you like to share with students about your experience at UCSB

My experience at UCSB has taught me the importance of taking advantage of the resources available on campus. Whether it's academic support, social opportunities, or mental health resources, UCSB provides numerous tools to help you succeed. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or seek guidance. There are so many people here who want to see you thrive! I've learned that being proactive in seeking opportunities, both academically and socially, can lead to incredible growth and a better college experience. Also, remember to enjoy the journey. College is not just about academics but also about building relationships, learning about yourself, and finding your purpose.

Top tips for fellow students? (Study tips, self care hacks, fav resources on campus, etc

My top tips are: to introduce yourself to your classmates and build connections, whether it’s making friends or finding study partners. Having someone you know in a class can be really beneficial. When it comes to studying, time management is key, and don't forget to take regular breaks. While academics are important, it’s also essential to be kind to yourself and remember that taking breaks is perfectly okay. There are so many great study spots on campus, so be sure to explore and make use of the student centers that offer great environments for studying. Some of my favorites are the ONDAS Center, the Transfer Student Center, and El Centro.

Best advice you've received that has helped you at UCSB

The best advice that I have received that has helped me at UCSB is to get involved early and take advantage of the resources available. Try to join clubs, attend events, and don't be afraid to ask for help whether it's from an academic standpoint, personal or social. Finding a community within the campus will really dictate the college experience, it's really about what you put into it.

Why did you choose to be an EOP peer mentor/office assistant?

I chose to be an EOP peer mentor because when I first came to UCSB, I had great trouble navigating through the transition and felt alone. It wasn’t until I started using EOP that I began to feel more supported. EOP has been crucial for me, and I want to advocate for it by sharing my experiences with other students to help them find the same support and guidance.
