If you are a first-generation and/or income-eligible student, what has your experience been like at UCSB?

My experience as a first-generation and income-eligible student at UCSB has been a big sigh of relief. Coming into UCSB, I was very nervous and scared about college, unaware of what to expect. While my experience has not always been rainbows and butterflies, the community I have built and the resources available helped put my mind at ease, making my experience not only possible but also enjoyable.

What would you like to share with students about your experience at UCSB?

You can feel lost sometimes, maybe even alone. I know I have! What helped me overcome those feelings was finding my people, my community. Our school is big and can feel intimidating, but there is an empty spot out there waiting for you to fill it. Be brave, and step out of your comfort zone. Your community is out there waiting for you!

Top tips for fellow students? (Study tips, self care hacks, fav resources on campus, etc)

I believe the Culture Resource Centers (CRC’s) are underrated; they are a great space to study, especially during Midterms and Finals season! The AS Food Bank is also a great resource for free food. Google Calendar is my best friend, a great, easy tool to help you balance school and your personal life.

Best advice you've received that has helped you at UCSB.

We are all on the same boat. No one has everything figured out, and that is okay! All you can do is give it your all; everything else is out of your control. You don't have to figure it out all by yourself. There are people out there who want to help, and it's okay to ask for it.

Why did you choose to be a member of the EOP Team?

EOP has helped me tremendously, whether it was academically, financially, or even socially. I found my greatest friends through STEP and great help through their advising team. I want to be able to give back to this resource and help other first-generation students. I want to be a helping hand and help other first-gen students succeed in higher education.
