Scholar's Program Peer Mentor

Major(s) and Minor (s):

Sociology, Applied Psychology Minor

If you are a first-generation and/or income-eligible student, what has your experience been like at UCSB?

I was initially intimidated to enter college as a first-generation student. I came to find out that resources like EOP and the Ondas center exist, and work to help me succeed! I was fortunately greeted with such a large network of support from other peers and staff, people who understood the struggles of navigating higher education. The biggest thing I have taken away from my college experience as a First-gen student is that success is subjective. No one can take away your sense of fulfillment and achievement.

What would you like to share with students about your experience at UCSB?

I won't lie and say it's been easy at all times. It's my circle of good friends and advisors that really help lighten the load of work and school. It always feels nice to celebrate a good exam grade or watch a Santa Barbara sunset with people who care about you.

Top tips for fellow students?

Utilize the beach! Take a walk on the sand and clear your head, play some beach volleyball with friends, sunbathe with a good book; living walking distance to a beach is a blessing many students take for granted!

Best advice you've received that has helped you at UCSB.

Try everything once; join the adventure club, stop by an org meeting, wait in line for a Jesus Burger! You never know who you'll meet, what knowledge you can walk away with, or what spontaneous adventure you may come by.

Why did you choose to be an EOP peer mentor?

Everyone can use a little advising from time to time, myself included. Now, I am well equipped and ready to initiate this role reversal, where I can offer a little of my own insight and guidance to the EOP population for a change. After three years at UCSB, I am eager to give back to the First-gen/low-income community that has been rooted for my success throughout my time in college.
