If you are a first-generation and/or income-eligible student, what has your experience been like at UCSB?
I would have been lost if I didn’t have a support system here. As a first-gen, it felt terrifying asking for help but my time at UCSB has been surreal after realizing that people here love to help. Knowing I had support from other amazing like-minded individual from similar backgrounds, both peers and staff, has empowered me to focus on my academics.
What would you like to share with students about your experience at UCSB?
Signing up for EOP’s STEP program in 2022 set me up for a great experience. I became pretty knowledgeable on campus resources which offered me a great sense of security. It’s never too late to take advantage of those resources either.
Top tips for fellow students? (Study tips, self care hacks, fav resources on campus, etc)
Time goes by fast here so acknowledge the present and live intentionally. Don’t ever be afraid to reach out to EOP, if not for counselors, then for a friend.
Best advice you've received that has helped you at UCSB.
Strategically place yourself in environments that will challenge you to step out of your comfort zone for growth. Water that garden and watch opportunities spring.
Why did you choose to be an EOP office assistant?
I’ve adored the connections I’ve made with others in peer mentor positions in the past and wanted to experience it year-round.
