If you are a first-generation and/or income-eligible student, what has your experience been like at UCSB?

My experience as a first-generation, non-traditional student has been great. I love my time at UCSB working on research, going to classes, working in the lab and projects. I am a bit shocked that I got into two labs, and although I sometimes struggle with the hidden curriculum, I find ways to press on through.

What would you like to share with students about your experience at UCSB?

UCSB is a great school no matter your background. Effort, showing up, and being kind to others go a long way.

Top tips for fellow students? (Study tips, self care hacks, fav resources on campus, etc)

Go all out from the start and don't let up. Study in the way you will be tested (if you will be tested in multiple choice, then make study tests). Also try to write down a picture or diagram from memory. Rewrite what you learned from lecture solely from memory, then go back and fill in the gaps. At a later time, try again and see if you can hold in more information.

Best advice you've received that has helped you at UCSB.

Get as much exposure as you can and try to get into research as early as possible.

Why did you choose to be a member of the EOP Team?

Part of my research with the ACCESS Lab focuses on transfer and first-generation students. I have helped my peers prepare for poster presentations, talks, and interviews, and I feel that I can provide support in that way for students to feel more confident in their presentations/projects. I really like to genuinely help others, help them build confidence, and uplift people to see their own potential.
